This isn't aimed at you or Lung by the way, just a general attitude here at the forum that's been around for as long as I can remember.</div></div>
Well man, sometimes you get to feeling that way because you've got to admit--there are people who probably know a lot more about the game than you do on here, even on the offensive side of the ball that you're a fan of and follow so closely. When you get into a convo like this, discussing gameplan and schemes, and you're only playing with half a deck (aka knowing something about the offensive side of the ball), you're gonna come across as not knowing nearly as much as someone on here who knows about strategy on both sides of the football. Don't complain because someone knows more about the game than you do and their argument makes more sense because you don't know nearly as much about it as they do--try to learn more.
For example--you understand the spread, the I, the Wing-T, Single Wing, other offensive formations you understand the responsibilities of the skill players, but I don't think you understand about how the line is supposed to block on certain plays--where their assignments are, who they're going to double or try to get a chip on, etc...
And you've admitted you don't understand the nuances of defense, but just know the face value of a lot of formations and what they're supposed to be good for. Until you understand the main differences between a 4-3, 3-4, 5-2, or even zone drops w/max coverage as opposed to bringing the house, you won't get the entire game, sadly. When you see a great defense play football (i.e.--'85 Bears, '70's Steelers, 2000 Ravens, 2001 Hurricanes, etc.) it can be infinitely more beautiful than watching a football spiral thru the air if you're looking at how the defense is imposing it's will and taking away anything an offense wants to do because they run their system and make the offense make mistakes--or better put in your terms, the offense can execute greatly and the playcalling can be exactly what it's supposed to be--but the defense stops it anyway because they run their defensive scheme better than the offense runs their scheme.
Take your eyes off the QB the next game you watch, and pay attention to the line play. Once you start to get why certain guys do certain things on a particular play, move your eyes back to the LB's. See how they flow to the football, and pay special attention to where they start on the defensive side of the formation and where the offensive play ends up. If, say, the LB lines up at the 25 and the ball's on the 20, and the play ends up on the 22--the LB's more than likely did their job of filling the hole. This is especially evident on stretch plays. After that, pay attention to the DB's, and try to find a team that plays a lot of different coverages and tries to confuse the QB. See the principles in bump & run man coverage as opposed to the drops they take in a zone read coverage. You know enough about offense that you understand why they're doing what they're trying to do--so you understand what the defense wants to stop. My challenge to you is to gain an understanding of how the defense goes about stopping a perfectly executed offensive play, because that does happen...otherwise games would end up with finals of 200-198 every game.
it is like not understanding why a punter would knock the ball out of the endzone to give a team 2 points instead of them recovering the ball and getting 6 with an extra point or 2 point conversion to make it 7 or 8 points given up. Gotta have a feel for all 3 aspects of the game and not just one aspect of the game.
Ole Syntax should get a couple of the games on tape and run them in slow motion- this will give him the chance to see ALL of what goes on and how each position acts and re-acts. As for the Wave, you guys need 2 games. Don't look past this week. A state ring would be great, Good Luck.
